Amy Thornton's Flying Pictures - Dinard / St.Malo,
30 Apr - 1 May 2005
This was going to be a day trip to Dinard/St.Malo but turned into an overnighter. We had planned to leave White Waltham at 9am
but delayed 2 hours in the hope the cloud would clear. In the end, we took off at 11am with a cloud base of 800ft and climbed on top at 3000ft. The cloud
didn't disappear until near the Channel Islands and we were given a straight-in approach for 17.
A very easy flight under RIS and we were handed over from Farnborough to Solent to Bournemouth very nicely.
After checking the likelihood of fog the next morning, we sorted out Customs & Immigration and a Flight Plan for the following
morning so we could be back at White Waltham in time for the next pilot's booking at 10am.
We got to the airfield the next morning at 7am BST ready for a 7.30am departure for a 2hr flight to get back to the UK by 10am.
There was thick fog from just off the French coast until Southampton.
Overheard an amusing exchange between ATC and a commercial pilot which went something like this...
ATC: R27 RVR 1000m, stop end 350m.
Pilot: ...
ATC: RVR 350m, stop end 1000m
Pilot: ...Oh yes, of course it is...!
